Prostate Cancer Prevention
There are still no hard and fast rules that will positively lead to total prostate cancer prevention, and research is ongoing to find strategies that are safe and effective in order to check this disease. This arises from the fact that cancer of prostate is a complicated disease whose full range of factors even as to its causes are yet to be understood. Nevertheless, while trials and other research are on-going here are some suggestions :
Diet and nutrition
- Eat moderate -sized meals and try and keep your calorie intake down
- a diet rich in fruits and vegetables could help you to lower the risk of this cancer, all types of cancer actually.
- cut down on fatty foods, choose a diet rich in whole-grain foods rather than highly refined carbohydrates
- eat foods that contain fats found in fish like herring and mackerel.
- choose a diet rich in anti-oxidants. Drink green tea, it is said to be rich in anti-oxidants.
- diets rich in legumes are also recommended as the protein found in them produces hormones that may possibly counter the presence of the male hormone testosterone on which the growth of the tumor thrives.
- tomatoes and tomato products including tomato sauce are now linked to lower chances of prostate cancer
- drink in moderation, if at all.
The use of drugs and vitamin supplement
Tests have shown that a higher intake of the mineral selenium and vitamin E is linked to prostate cancer prevention. Ordinarily, selenium is a part of anti-oxidants naturally produced in the body and boosting its content in the blood has been linked with the reduction of the incidence or spread of the disease. Just remember that their intakes should be under doctor’s supervision especially if obtained over-the-counter and do not exceed the stated dosage. Exercising
Although the connection between exercising and prostate cancer prevention has not been proven conclusively, choice of a healthy lifestyle is always a definite plus. This step may not only help in lowering the occurrence and growth of the tumor but it also helps to prevent other cancers and conditions such as heart and respiratory diseases.
Over 30,000 deaths result from this cancer but now there is growing education and awareness leading to early detection, intervention methods and diagnosis , it is possible to lower mortality rates. And while some factors like race, genetics and family history may be beyond control, certain others can be controlled and prostate cancer prevention is now a possibility.
