Survival Prostate Cancer: What Are The Statistics?

Other than skin cancers, this is the most common form of cancer among American men. The basic survival prostate cancer statistics show that whereas 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed with this disease, only 1 in every 35 will die of it. Many are the numbers that have been diagnosed with cancer of prostate but are still alive today.

There has been a lot of improvements in methods of detection and treatment meaning that cancers found earlier can be treated sooner and more effectively. The increase in the application of  Protein Specific Antigen  the prostate cancer psa testing has also helped arrive at more accurate diagnoses sooner. This no doubt reflects better prognosis in diagnosed patients and higher survival prostate cancer rates. Take a look at this…

– the relative 5 year survival rate is 100% ( that is five or more after starting treatment )
– the relative 10 year survival rate is 91%
– the relative 15 year rate is 76%.

Do bear in mind that these rates are strongly related to the prostate cancer stage of the disease and also to how far it has spread outside of the prostate gland at diagnosis.  That means that if the the disease has metastasized on diagnosis, the survival rate can come down to as low as 30%. The rates also decrease with the age of the patient.

Whichever way we look at it, statistics for survival prostate cancer show definite improvements over the last 20 years due to improved treatments for both early and advanced cases of the disease, and that is the good news.
